What is wrong with a majoritarianism

Dear Chaitanya,

Majoritarianism refers to the policy of dominance of the majority over the minority sections of society.  Majoritarianism leads to alienation of minority section and situations turn into ethnic conflicts and wars. We can take an example from Sri Lanka, where the following things happened due to majoritarianism :
1) In Sri Lanka, the Sinhala community-owned majority and dominated other communities in the country.
2) They adopted majoritarian policies and acclaimed Sinhala as the official language.
3) As a result, Sri Lankan Tamils were completely ignored and hence they started their own parties to demand a separate state for Tamils.
4) War broke out between both the communities as their demand was not fulfilled.
5) The majority government gave no room for power-sharing resulting in weakening the unity of the country.
