A wholesaler allows a discount of 20% on the list price of an article to a retailer.The retailer sells it at 5% discount on the list price . If the customer pays Rs 38 for the article, what is the retailer"s profit

(please give the answer this question with solution) Chapter name is DISCOUNT

Let the list price be x

Discount = 20%

SP = 80x/100 = 4x / 5

Now the list price is 4x/5

Discount = 5%

SP = 19 / 20 * 4x / 5

= 19x / 25

19x / 25 = 38

x =( 38 * 25 ) / 19

x = 50

The retailer bought it at Rs 40

But the retailer sold it at Rs 38.

Loss = Rs2

ANS: Let the list price be x

Discount = 20%

the CP of retailer is = 80x/100 = 4x / 5

Now the retailer sold the item at Discount  5% on the list price

The SP  of retailer =95x/100

  therefore 19x / 20 = Rs 38

x =( 38 * 20 ) / 19

x = 40

The retailer bought it at 4x/5 = 4*40 /5 = 32

But the retailer sold it at Rs 38

Therefore retailer earned a profit of Rs(38-32) = Rs 6

 Dear nipun88.

Since  you have asked what is the retailers profit,

The retailers profit is Rs 6 as calculated above  and that is correct as per your question.

However, profit in term of percentage will be as follows:

He has earned  on Rs 32  a profit of Rs 6

Therefore profit percentage is  =  6 *100/32  = 18.75%

 The retailers Profit percentage = 18.75%

Hope now it will help you to understand .
